Building a 10km Ice Crossing: Precision, Resilience, and Purpose

This March, Status North Inc. has been diligently advancing a critical winter infrastructure project: the construction of a 10-kilometre ice crossing over Bistcho Lake.

The photos from the field capture the reality of building a road where none exists—on a frozen lake—where every step must be measured, verified, and maintained under extreme conditions.

This crossing is essential to restoring access to Ndeh Tapawingo Lodge, which sustained severe wildfire damage in 2024. With limited access routes available, this temporary winter road is enabling the safe transport of equipment and materials required for rebuilding.

Field Insight: Measuring Ice for Safety

One of the most critical operations in your project is clearly demonstrated: ice thickness testing.

Using an auger, crews drill through the ice at regular intervals to measure its depth and strength. This process ensures the road can safely support increasing loads as construction progresses. This is not a one-time check—it’s a continuous process that ensures safety across the full 10km route.

Supporting Heavy Transport

Once operational, the ice road must safely handle heavy truck traffic transporting materials to site.

To maintain safety and structural integrity:

  • Vehicle speeds are controlled to minimize stress on the ice

  • Load spacing is enforced to distribute weight effectively

  • Conditions are continuously monitored and adjusted as needed

This ensures that each trip across the lake contributes to progress without compromising the roadway.

Working in Extreme Conditions

Projects like this demand both technical expertise and resilience. Crews faced:

  • Freezing temperatures impacting equipment and performance reaching to -45C some days

  • Open exposure to sun and wind across the lake

  • Constant environmental monitoring to adapt to changing ice conditions

Despite these challenges, the team delivered a fully functional crossing within a limited seasonal window.

Enabling Recovery

Ice road construction is a specialized discipline that combines engineering precision, environmental awareness, and field experience. The work at Bistcho Lake highlights how temporary infrastructure can play a vital role in long-term recovery; connecting remote locations and enabling progress where it would otherwise be impossible. This 10km ice crossing represents more than a construction achievement, it is a critical link in the recovery and rebuilding process for Ndeh Tapawingo Lodge.

With reliable access now established, materials and equipment can continue to move efficiently, supporting ongoing reconstruction efforts following the 2024 wildfire.
